Mary Margaret is the Director of Community Care at Salem Presbyterian Church. She grew up in Winston-Salem, NC, where she attended First Presbyterian Church throughout her adolescence. She received her Bachelor’s (2014) and Master’s Degrees (2016) in Social Work from Appalachian State University, with a concentration in Individuals and Families.

During her undergraduate studies, Mary Margaret completed her internship at The Crossnore School in Crossnore, NC (population: 131!) working with K-12 adolescents in the foster care system in rural North Carolina. After completing her Bachelor’s degree, Mary Margaret returned to Winston-Salem to spend a year in full-time youth ministry at First Presbyterian Church working with middle school girls. After seeing the deep need for mentorship, connection and healing for adolescents during that time, she chose to pursue her Master’s in Social Work in order to become a clinical social worker and mental health counselor. Mary Margaret completed her MSW practicum in the Watauga County School System in Western North Carolina, where she served at-risk adolescents and their families in an academic setting. Through all of these experiences, Mary Margaret has gained a passion for helping adolescents and their families find emotional health and wholeness.

After graduate school, Mary Margaret pressed pause on her professional journey to attend a ministry school called The 18 Inch Journey in Sophia, NC. During these 8 months, Mary Margaret explored the intersection of spiritual and emotional health, and gained practical tools for daily life in this intersection with the Trinity.

In addition to a passion for mental health and spirituality, Mary Margaret is an accomplished musician. You can find her music here. She began attending Salem Presbyterian Church in 2018, and is thrilled to serve and use her gifts in her role as Director of Community Care. Mary Margaret meets with congregants one-on-one, organizes and oversees small groups, and provides an informed perspective on emotional and spiritual health to the church.
